Why we Choose Natural Rattan Reeds instead of fibre?

At Parkminster we have made a very deliberate choice about the reeds we include with our reed diffusers and reed diffuser refills. While many modern diffuser brands now use fibre reeds, we continue to favour natural rattan reeds for environmental and sustainability reasons.

Rattan reeds are a natural plant product.
They are harvested from fast-growing climbing palms that grow in tropical climates. When cut and dried, the stems naturally contain small channels that draw fragrance oil upward and release scent into the air. Because rattan is a plant material, the reeds are 100% biodegradable and come from sustainably harvested natural resources that support traditional rural industries where rattan is grown and processed.

By contrast, most fibre diffuser reeds are manufactured materials. They are typically made from a blend of cotton fibres and polyester. Polyester in particular raises some environmental concerns:

• Polyester is a plastic — chemically known as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), the same material used to make disposable drinks bottles.
• It is produced by melting plastic pellets and extruding them into fibres.
• As a plastic material, polyester is not biodegradable and can take hundreds of years to break down in landfill.
• Cotton, while natural, is also one of the most resource-intensive crops to grow, requiring large amounts of water and agricultural land.

It is true that fibre reeds can sometimes provide a slightly stronger or faster scent throw because their structure is engineered for consistent absorption. However, at Parkminster we believe that natural materials and environmental responsibility matter just as much as performance.

For this reason we include 14 FREE natural rattan reeds with our Apothecary & Star Collection Diffuser Refills, giving you a beautifully simple and sustainable way to fragrance your home. Natural reeds may require turning occasionally to maintain scent throw, but they offer a more traditional and environmentally conscious alternative to plastic-based fibre reeds.
