Why Reed Diffusers Stop Smelling - And Why Refills Are The Best Solution

By Krystyna, Founder of Parkminster

There’s a moment most reed diffuser lovers know well.

You buy a beautiful diffuser, place it in your hallway, bedroom or bathroom, and for weeks the fragrance fills the room perfectly. Then gradually… it seems to disappear.

Many people assume the diffuser has “gone wrong” or simply stopped working. But in reality, reed diffusers naturally lose performance over time - and in most cases, they simply need refreshing properly.

That’s exactly why we created our Reed Diffuser Refills.

At Parkminster, we’ve always believed a luxury diffuser bottle should be something you keep and continue enjoying, not something designed to be thrown away every few weeks. Whether it’s a hand-finished apothecary jar, a classic green regency bottle or a ceramic vessel from our Kiln Collection, the container itself becomes part of your home.

The good news is that most reed diffusers can be brought back to life very easily with fresh fragrance oil and new reeds - whether you’re refilling one of our own Parkminster diffuser bottles or a favourite vessel from another brand you already have at home.

Why Reed Diffusers Lose Their Scent

A reed diffuser works by drawing fragrance oil up through the reeds and slowly releasing scent into the air.

Over time, several things happen naturally:

  • the fragrance oil evaporates
  • reeds become saturated
  • dust and air exposure affect diffusion
  • and sometimes we simply become used to the fragrance ourselves

Very often, customers tell us they think their diffuser has stopped smelling entirely, but visitors to their home can still smell it immediately. This is known as “nose blindness” - we become accustomed to familiar scents surprisingly quickly.

However, blocked reeds are one of the biggest reasons a diffuser loses strength over time.

As fragrance oil travels repeatedly through the reeds, they gradually become clogged and saturated, reducing their ability to diffuse scent effectively into the room. This means even when there is still plenty of fragrance oil left in the bottle, the diffuser may no longer smell as strong as it once did.

Simply topping up the oil without changing the reeds often doesn’t fully solve the problem.

Replacing old reeds with fresh ones can make an immediate difference to fragrance performance, helping the diffuser disperse scent properly again.

That’s exactly why we include 14 free reeds with every Parkminster Reed Diffuser Refill. We want customers to be able to completely refresh their diffuser rather than simply adding more oil to blocked reeds that have already stopped performing at their best.

A Beautiful Diffuser Bottle Should Last

One of the things I’ve always loved about home fragrance is how much the vessel itself adds to a room.

A reed diffuser is no longer just fragrance - it’s part of the décor of your home.

Our  Apothecary Reed Diffusers were designed with timeless amber glass inspired by traditional apothecary bottles. The  Regency Reed Diffusers use deep green glass for a more classic look, while our  Kiln Collection Ceramic Reed Diffusers were created to feel softer and more tactile within a room.

I’ve always believed people should be able to continue enjoying a diffuser bottle they love, whether it originally came from us or another brand entirely. A beautiful vessel shouldn’t need replacing simply because the fragrance oil has run low.

Refills allow you to continue enjoying the diffuser you already love, while also changing fragrances through the seasons if you wish.

Why Reed Diffuser Refills Make More Sense

Over the years, customers have increasingly moved towards refilling rather than replacing entire diffusers every time the oil runs low.

Partly, this is about sustainability. Reusing a quality diffuser bottle reduces unnecessary packaging and waste.

But it’s also about practicality.

A good refill allows you to:

  • revive an existing diffuser
  • refresh the scent throw with new reeds
  • enjoy better value over time
  • and continue using decorative vessels you already love

Our own Reed Diffuser Refills are 200ml, which is noticeably larger than many standard refills available elsewhere. A larger refill not only lasts longer, but also gives customers more flexibility when topping up different diffuser bottles around the home.

Many customers even split one refill between smaller vessels in different rooms.

Fresh Reeds Matter More Than Most People Realise

One of the most common mistakes people make is pouring new oil into old reeds.

Even high-quality fragrance oil will struggle if the reeds themselves are already blocked.

Over time, reeds naturally become saturated with oil and microscopic dust particles from the air. Once blocked, they can no longer draw fragrance upwards efficiently, meaning the diffuser gradually loses its scent throw.

Fresh reeds effectively reset the diffuser.

In many cases, customers are surprised how much stronger their diffuser smells after changing both the oil and the reeds together.

That’s why every one of our refills includes 14 complimentary reeds - enough to properly refresh your diffuser and adjust the scent strength depending on the size of your room.

For smaller rooms, fewer reeds are often enough. Larger spaces or open hallways may benefit from using more.

How Long Should A Reed Diffuser Last?

There’s no exact answer, as it depends on:

  • room temperature
  • airflow
  • sunlight
  • number of reeds used
  • and the size of the diffuser itself

But generally speaking:

Diffuser Size

Approximate Longevity

100ml

4–6 weeks

150ml

6–8 weeks

200ml

Up to 3 months

Positioning also makes a difference. Hallways and areas with gentle airflow tend to help fragrance circulate more effectively than enclosed corners.

The Joy Of Refreshing A Favourite Fragrance

One of my favourite things about reed diffuser refills is how they allow people to keep enjoying pieces that have become part of their home.

Sometimes it’s a diffuser sitting beside a bedside table for years. Sometimes it’s a ceramic vessel that perfectly suits a room. Sometimes customers simply have a fragrance they associate with a particular season or memory.

A refill allows that experience to continue.

And very often, all a diffuser really needs is fresh oil, fresh reeds and a little care to feel completely revived again.
