From My Kitchen Table to Your Home: The Story of Parkminster
After preparing this Q&A for an upcoming magazine feature, I thought it might be really helpful to share it here on our blog too—so you can get a closer look at how Parkminster started, what inspires our fragrances, and what makes our products unique.
Hi, I’m Krystyna, founder of Parkminster, a Cornish candle company passionate about creating natural scented candles, botanical candle fragrances, and natural reed diffusers that bring calm and beauty into your home.
How It All Began
Parkminster started around 2010 at my kitchen table. I was looking for home fragrance products that felt honest, well-made, and fairly priced—but I couldn’t find anything that truly matched what I envisioned. So, I began experimenting myself. What started as a small personal project gradually grew into a business built on thoughtful craftsmanship and a calmer way of living.
The inspiration really struck during a 2008 visit to New York with my partner, who was there for his design business. I discovered small, independent brands hand-making natural skincare, bath salts, candles, and perfumes. They were sold in local lifestyle stores that celebrated natural, small-batch products and encouraged people to step away from mass production. The ethos of these shops—products kinder to the planet and our wellbeing—left a lasting impression and inspired me to create my own natural fragrances and candles.
Challenges Along the Way
Growing a small, independent business has required patience and resilience. One of the biggest challenges has been expanding while staying true to our original values—hand-blending every fragrance and pouring every candle ourselves, rather than outsourcing production. This slower, thoughtful approach means careful planning and a strong, dedicated team.
Another challenge is the constant expectation of growth. Many brands feel pressure to get bigger and bigger, but our goal has never been to become the largest candle company. Instead, we focus on building a business that is strong, resilient, and genuinely rewarding for everyone involved. Accepting this and explaining it to others has been a learning curve, but it keeps us grounded in what truly matters.
Our Products
At Parkminster, we specialise in natural home fragrance products. Our range includes hand-poured soy wax candles, natural reed diffusers, room mists, and bath products, all made in our Fragrance Workshop in Cornwall using plant-based soy wax, essential oils, and carefully selected ingredients. Every fragrance is blended in-house, and every product is made to order, ensuring it’s fresh and uniquely crafted for each customer.
Our most popular products are our scented candles and reed diffusers. Collections like our Regency Collection—with deep green glass, black packaging, and gold shield labels—and our Apothecary Reed Diffusers, housed in handmade glassware inspired by science lab vessels, have become firm favourites. People appreciate both the design and the botanical candle fragrances we carefully craft.
We don’t chase trends. Our fragrances are inspired by nature, the seasons, and everyday life—gardens, woodlands, herbs, and coastal landscapes. By keeping our approach authentic, our products stay fresh and timeless without relying on short-lived trends.
What Makes Us Different
What sets Parkminster apart is our “made-to-order” ethos combined with our fragrance-first philosophy. Every candle or diffuser purchased from our website is hand-made individually, with each fragrance carefully measured and blended in-house before being combined with our natural soy wax or diffuser bases. Every product is personalised, labelled with the customer’s name and date of creation, and for stockists, we proudly include their shop name on the label so their customers remember where it came from.
This hands-on, personal approach ensures our natural scented candles and natural reed diffusers are not only high quality but genuinely connected to the people who enjoy them.
Stand-Out Moments
It has been incredibly rewarding to see Parkminster grow from a kitchen-table project into a brand stocked by hundreds of independent retailers across the UK and internationally. In the past, we were fortunate to supply a wonderful chain of stores in Japan, and even today, years later, customers there still seek us out because of our minimalist design and natural product ethos.
We’ve also been honoured to feature in magazines like Country Homes & Interiors, Prima Magazine, House Beautiful, and Vogue. Supplying prestigious organisations such as the National Trust, Fenwicks, the Sir John Soane Museum, St Martin-in-the-Fields Church - a Classical Concert Venue, and even a major music awards has been an incredible privilege.
Navigating Today’s Challenges
Times are tough for independent retailers and their customers alike. We know that people don’t always have that extra to spend on small luxuries like candles or reed diffusers. That’s why we keep our pricing fair—sometimes even on the lower end—so our products remain accessible without compromising quality.
We’re not a trend-driven brand chasing quick profit. Our goal is longevity: to be making natural scented candles, botanical candle fragrances, and natural reed diffusers for another 16 years—or more—without ever exploiting our customers or stockists. Quality, sustainability, and thoughtful creation always come first.
The Future of Independent Retail
We believe independent retail will thrive when shops focus on experiences—events, workshops, or chances to meet the makers. Customers are seeking connection as much as products.
Brands like Parkminster also play a role by introducing more budget-conscious lines, ensuring that even customers on a tighter budget can enjoy high-quality natural scented candles and reed diffusers. Together, thoughtful retailers and makers can create a welcoming, resilient retail environment.
Social Media? ... Not Our Thing
We’ll be honest—we’re not fans of social media! As a small, hands-on business, our focus is on making, not marketing. While we do maintain a presence online, only around 1% of our sales come from the posts or reels we share. Like many, we try to put our phones away at home and are often saddened by how much time people spend glued to screens. We’d much rather nurture real, lasting connections with our stockists and customers than chase likes or hashtags.
Advice for New Businesses
Reality check coming .... Lower your expectations (a bit) - not every idea is 'Dragons’ Den' material. Many start-ups take years to become stable. Focus on quality, service, honesty, and genuine relationships. Be kind - to your suppliers, your team, your customers, and to yourself. Work hard, but don’t forget to live life alongside your business. The companies that endure are often the ones that grow slowly, thoughtfully, and with kindness at their core.
What’s Next for Parkminster
We’re excited about introducing new fragrances, expanding our bath and body range, retiring some scents, and connecting with new stockists across the UK, Europe, and hopefully Australia and New Zealand. Our mission remains the same: creating thoughtful, hand-made products that bring calm, beauty, and natural fragrance into your home.
Thank you for supporting independent makers like us. We couldn’t do it without you!
