How Are Scented Candles Made? The Story Behind Natural Fragrance, Essential Oils and Botanical Blends

After more than 16 years of creating fragrances at Parkminster, I still find the most fascinating part of making candles is the very first step: the scent.

Before there is wax, before there is a wick, before there is a finished candle ready to light, there is a fragrance story waiting to be created.

A scent can transport us instantly. A single aroma can remind us of a summer garden, a coastal walk, a favourite holiday, a childhood memory or simply the feeling of being at home. Creating fragrances that capture those moments is what inspires every candle, reed diffuser and home fragrance we make here in our Cornish workshop.

But where do those beautiful scents actually come from? How are scented candles made, and what is the difference between essential oils, botanical ingredients and fragrance oils?

I thought it would be interesting to share a little more about the journey behind our fragrances and how we create the scents that have become part of so many homes.

What Gives A Candle Its Scent?

A scented candle is created by combining three essential elements: wax, wick and fragrance.

The fragrance is where the real artistry begins.

Some scents come directly from nature. Essential oils are extracted from plants using processes such as steam distillation or cold pressing. These oils capture the natural aromatic compounds found within flowers, leaves, fruits, herbs and woods.

Lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, citrus fruits and many herbs are familiar examples of plants that can produce beautiful essential oils.

However, nature does not always provide every scent we experience in our homes. A fresh fig tree, for example, does not produce an essential oil that smells like the sweet, green, leafy fragrance we associate with warm Mediterranean gardens. Capturing that feeling requires the skill of a perfumer, carefully blending different aromatic ingredients to recreate a scent inspired by nature.

This is where fragrance oils play an important role.

Essential Oils vs Fragrance Oils: Understanding The Difference

There is often confusion around essential oils and fragrance oils, particularly when choosing natural home fragrance products.

Essential oils are completely natural extracts from plants. They are wonderfully aromatic and are often used in our more botanical fragrances, such as Lavender, Bay & Rosemary and Frankincense & Myrrh.

Fragrance oils are carefully created scent blends, often combining natural extracts with other aromatic ingredients to create complex, long-lasting fragrances designed specifically for use in candles and home fragrance.

Rather than thinking of one as better than the other, we believe it is about understanding how each ingredient can be used to create the best possible scent experience.

Some fragrances are beautifully captured through essential oils alone. Others need the skill of a perfumer to recreate a particular place, memory or moment.

Our Fresh Fig fragrance, which has been one of our best-selling scents for more than a decade, is a perfect example. It is inspired by the wonderful green freshness of a fig tree in summer: the leaves, the fruit, the warmth of the Mediterranean sun. Creating that fragrance requires a blend of carefully selected aromatic notes rather than a single ingredient.

How We Create A Parkminster Fragrance

Every Parkminster fragrance begins with inspiration.

Sometimes it comes from nature: a walk through the Cornish countryside, a visit to a garden, the smell of herbs growing outside the workshop or memories of places we have travelled.

Sometimes it begins with an ingredient. A particular essential oil, botanical extract or aromatic note can spark an idea for an entirely new fragrance.

From there, the process becomes one of patience and testing.

Creating a new scent is not simply a case of mixing ingredients together. Each fragrance needs balance. The top notes, middle notes and base notes all need to work together to create something that feels natural and inviting.

A fragrance might be tested for months before it becomes a finished Parkminster product.

We test how it performs in different waxes, how it develops when burning, how it fills a room and, most importantly, whether it creates the feeling we wanted to capture in the first place.

Handmade Home Fragrance From Our Cornish Workshop

Parkminster was founded on the belief that beautiful home fragrance should be made with care, not mass produced.

Everything we create is still hand blended and hand poured in our workshop here in Cornwall. Each candle, diffuser and room fragrance passes through our hands before it reaches your home.

Being small makers means we can pay attention to the details that matter: the quality of the ingredients, the balance of each fragrance and the experience our customers have when they light one of our candles.

We have always believed that fragrance should feel authentic. It should not simply smell strong; it should create an atmosphere.

A candle should make a room feel calmer, fresher, warmer or more welcoming.

Our Favourite Summer Fragrances For The Home

Summer is one of our favourite times of year for fragrance because it brings so much inspiration from nature.

Here are some of the scents we love most during the warmer months:

Fresh Fig

Our signature fragrance and a favourite for more than 16 years. Fresh Fig captures the feeling of sitting beneath a fig tree on a warm summer afternoon, with green leaves, fresh fruit and a gentle Mediterranean warmth.

Sicilian Fig

A brighter, more citrus-led interpretation of fig, inspired by the landscapes of Sicily. Fresh, uplifting and perfect for bringing a feeling of summer indoors.

Tomato Leaf

One of our most unusual and distinctive fragrances. Inspired by the scent of a greenhouse or vegetable garden in summer, with the fresh green aroma of tomato leaves and growing plants.

Pomelo & Ginger

Bright, fresh and full of energy, this fragrance combines sparkling citrus notes with warming ginger for a scent that feels like sunshine in a room.

Bay & Rosemary

A beautifully herbal fragrance inspired by coastal gardens and Mediterranean landscapes. Fresh rosemary, aromatic bay and green botanical notes create a wonderfully natural summer scent.

Why Choose Natural Home Fragrance?

For us, natural home fragrance is about more than simply the ingredients we use.

It is about the whole process.

It is about taking time to create fragrances properly, choosing ingredients carefully and making products that bring genuine enjoyment into everyday life.

We do not believe fragrance should be complicated. The best scents are often those that remind us of something familiar: a garden after rain, a walk by the sea, freshly cut herbs, a summer evening outdoors.

Those are the moments we try to capture in every Parkminster candle.

From our small Cornish workshop to homes across the country, every fragrance we create begins with the same question:

How can we capture a feeling?

Because ultimately, that is what great fragrance does.

It turns a simple moment into a memory.
